Shirin Neshat at the Walker Art Center
Shirin Neshat is just a fabulous talent and a spectacular woman. I really liked her respectful differentiation of an artist and a filmmaker during a discussion at the Walker Art Center:
“I really, now, describe the difference between working as artists and filmmakers is that artists are really concerned with the ideas of concepts. Filmmakers are about telling stories.”
I find that you can substitute these terms for almost any craft — whether it be radio producers or landscape architects. Some are trying to tell stories and others are trying to execute concepts. I find the former much more fulfilling and humanizing in the long run. But they’re not mutually exclusive I suppose.
